COCONUT CREEK – Wade Edmond has been a fixture of Broward County high school basketball since his playing days at Coconut Creek High.

A graduate of Creek in 1975, Edmond had a successful career at Blanche Ely High with five state tournament appearances along with a Class 3A state title in 1993.

After Blanche Ely, Edmond had stints as the coach at Broward College and as Ely’s school principal before retiring. The coaching fever still burned in his heart as he came out of retirement four years ago to become the head basketball coach at Creek.

This week Coconut Creek High hosted the inaugural Sunshine State Basketball Explosion Showcase. And though the Cougars struggled in their games Friday and Saturday, Edmond was enjoying time court side.

Creek lost to Jefferson (Ga.) 66-53 on Friday but rebounded against Miami Northwestern 71-68 on Saturday. Dwayne Flowers scored 18 points to lead the Cougars (3-6), while Jimsley Sineus added 17 points.

“It was like a divine intervention to come back to Coconut Creek and coach,” said Edmond. “For the lack of a better word, it’s been hard to keep the kids focused. It’s a different era we live it.”

Regardless, Edmond has seen progression and has seen positive baby steps in the direction of the program.

“We have the numbers and are in many games we’ve played unlike last year when we weren’t competitive,” said Edmond. “I’m not trying to duplicate what I did at Ely. I’m no longer career driven, but I’m trying to educate the fundamentals of the game to the kids.”
