The next chapter of the Nova High boys’ basketball program officially began Sunday as athletic director Pat McQuaid announced the hiring of former Coral Charter coach Alex Groothuis.

Groothuis, 45, takes over the Titans program after heading the Charter team for sevens years while compiling a 94-69 record. He was an assistant for the Panthers during the 2018-19 season.

“I’m looking forward for the opportunity to coach at Nova,” said Groothuis. “I’m very humbled.”

While at Coral Springs Charter he had three district titles over a five year stretch and advanced to the regional tournament four time in five seasons. He led the Panthers to the state tournament in 2014.

He had perhaps his best team in 2015 but lost to a John Collins Cardinal Newman team in the regional to end the season at 19-6.

Groothuis played high school in New York. He also coached college ball at Brooklyn College, Wagner, Fordham University and Palm Beach State.

He led Wagner to the NCAA as a 15th seed in 2003.
