COCONUT CREEK – It’s been a shaky start to the 2019-20 St. Thomas Aquinas boys’ basketball season.

There’s been more losses than victories and with the removal of first year coach Ed Nelson just last week, the Raiders program is in full out start over mode.

Replacing Nelson is Julius Sandi, who was named the head coach on Dec. 23. He was an assistant at Sagemont and a head coach at Cooper City.

The challenge to instill stability will perhaps be his biggest road to conquer.

His first game came Friday at the inaugural Sunshine State Basketball Explosion Showcase at Coconut Creek High. The 77-57 loss to Sickles proved there’s plenty of work ahead.

“I accept the challenge,” said Sandi. “I love basketball and it’s all about the kids. I have a job to do and I’m going to focus on that. So far, we’ve had two practices with a limited roster.”

Tristan Goldstein led the Raiders (3-8) with 17 points in the loss, while Max Codogan had 13 points. Aquinas trailed 40-25 at the half.

“I’m a positive guy and as a team we need to move in a positive direction. The players need to work hard and stick together. I’m here for them no matter what happens.”

FLORIDA CHRISTIAN 93, SPANISH RIVER 59: Junior guard Jordan Guerrero scored 20 first half points, including six 3-pointers, to lead the Patriots (7-3) in the first game of the inaugural showcase.

Guerrero was one of six Patriot players to convert a 3-pointer. Overall, they made 15 shots behind the arch.

Ryan Ramirez, Nicholas Mata and Fabian Quintana each added 11 points.

The Sharks (2-7) were led by Sam Schner with 15 points. Jacob Cottone and Dominic Barone each had 14 points.

CORAL REEF 61, AMERICAN HERITAGE 50: Estibien Cruz led the Barracudas with 14 points. Anthony Headley added 12 points.

The Patriots were paced by Renato Ruiz, who led all scorers with 20 points.

DOUGLAS COUNTY (Ga.) 60, BISHOP SNYDER 48: Jermichael Mahorn had 12 points to lead the Tigers.

Omarion Smith and Jaylen Jackson each added 11 points.

CEDAR SHOALS 78 MIAMI NORTHWESTERN 42: Senior guard Tyler Johnson led all scorers with 25 points. Kashik Brown added 16 points.

The Bulls, who trailed at the half 34-17, were led by Antwanne Thompson with 13 points.

TRI-CITIES 56, APOPKA 49: Demetrius Rives had 14 points and Peyton Daniels 13 points as the Bulldogs remained undefeated at 13-0.

Zach Anderson had 18 points to pace the Blue Darters (9-3).

JEFFERSON (Ga.) 66, COCONUT CREEK 53: Senior guard Spencer Darby led four platers in double-figures with 12 points to pace the Dragons.

The host Cougars were led by Jimsley Sineus with 18 points, while William Green added 16 points in Friday’s nightcap.
