With the girls district playoff’s starting this week we wanted to take a quick look at some of the top performers as they head into district play.
–Gabrielle “GiGi” Gonzalez of Nova High School the senior guard and Stony Brook commit has been as solid as advertised. Game in and game out she brings it and that is why the Titans and Coach Hively are 20-4 and favored to make a long playoff run. Last week Gabrielle was selected to the Big8 All Tournament Team, an award she has earned all 4 years of her career. Gabrielle brings an intense style of defense and the ability to score from anywhere on the court leading the Titans as they look to compete for a State Championship.
–Bella LaChance of St. Thomas High School is junior guard and a Vanderbilt commit who has led a talented Aquinas team to a 18-6 record. Bella was selected to the Big8 All Tournament team last week as they lost to Dillard on a last second shot. But take nothing away from St. Thomas they have had big wins against Nova, Dillard and Ely which gives the lady Aquinas a real shot at contending for a State Championship. Bella is scrappy intense guard who leads her team in scoring and is able to shoot it and attack the rim. Maybe her best trait is her toughness as she is able to create throughout the lane to score, get fouled or find someone cutting to the basket. But understand if she gets fouled she is going to make her foul shots, she has proved that time and time again. Bella and St. Thomas are at their best when she is running the point and playing her aggressive style in which she makes everybody better and that is why the Lady Aquinas are excited about the playoffs.
–Ja’leah Williams of Ely High School is a sophomore guard who is as talented as any player in the state. She was selected to the Big8 All Tournament team. She has consistenly put up big numbers for her team. Ja’leah eclipsed the 1000 point mark earlier this year and expect her to only get better. Making spectacular play after spectacular play Ja’leah is leading the Tigers in scoring and is a big reason why Ely is 19-7 on the season. Some injuries and lack of depth might cause some concern but with Ja’leah on the court the Tigers can beat anyone on any given night. If the Tigers get back healthy watch out for them to contend and a big rematch between St Thomas and them could determine the State Champion.
–Emma Wallhoff of Westminster Academy is a sophomore guard who possibly could be one of the elite shooters in the state. She is the Lions leading scorer and has eclipsed over 1500 points as only a sophomore. Emma has developed into more than a spot up shooter, her ability to be crafty to the hole has helped the Lions to make that jump. The Lions are 18-5 and look to contend for a district title. At some point they will run into the #1 Miami Country Day School and that will be a challenge but don’t count the Lions out as they have a young but talented team.
–Genovea Johnson of Dillard High School/Raven White of Dillard High School are a combination of seniors for Dillard that make them go. Coming off a big win in the Championship of the Big8 the Dillard Panthers are ready to challenge for another State Championship. Both of these girls Genovea and Raven are talanted, Genovea is tough off the dribble and creates so much for others and Raven is a force inside and she is willing to sacrifice her body for the team. Coach Pinder has these girls poised and ready to make a long playoff run.
