BOCA RATON — St. Andrew’s handed Coral Springs Charter its first loss of the season, 69-61, Friday night to take over sole possession of first place in Class 5A-District 12.

The Scots received double-doubles from both junior center Yussif Basa-Ama (26 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks) and senior point guard Alejandro Ralat (13 points, 10 rebounds) in running their record to 8-0 overall, 4-0 in the district.

The loss drops Coral Springs Charter to 6-1 overall,  3-1 in league play.

“The whole team contributed today,” said the 6-foot-9 Basa-Ama. “That was a team win.”

The game was a back-and-forth affair. St. Andrew’s scored the first 11 points of the game to jump out to an 11-0 lead.

But Charter slowly closed the gap and by the time the first quarter came to an end it was 21-all.

Charter led 41-36 at the half. The Scots then outscored CSC 33-20 in the second half to pull away.

Basa-Ama had 18 of his 26 in the first half. He has now scored at least 19 points in six of St. Andrew’s eight games. West Virginia, South Florida, Florida State, Stanford, Harvard and Yale are some of the schools in the mix for the talented junior.

Sophomore Josh Minott also hit double figures (19) along with Basa-Ama and Ralat.

Junior guard Ivan Reynolds led Charter with 20 points, including five 3-pointers. Fellow reserves Aidan Abell (2022) and Dominic Brooks (2020) had 13 and 10 points, respectively.

“We’ve got to get tougher,” said CS Charter coach Lamar Twitty. “We’ve got to get better.”
